Tom Welles (Nicolas Cage) is a surveillance specialist - what used to be known as a "private eye" - but his version of the profession is hardly the stuff of which legends are made. He has a modest, home-based practice in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where he lives an existence remarkable only for its normalcy with wife Amy (Catherine Keener) and baby daughter, Cindy. How to Practice Shooting for the Hunt

Hunting involves lots of different tactics - from tracking prey without alerting it to calculating the right distance for an accurate shot and using the proper kind of firearm or other weaponry to take it down and then collect it and carry it home. You need to know what to wear for the hunt, where to go to hunt, how to follow signs in nature that lead you to your prey, and how to carry the slain prey out of the wilderness without it spoiling. Then you have to know how to safely prepare the prey for cooking or skinning and how to cook it so that it tastes great. But all of these many types of hunting skills all depend on the most important skill of all, which is knowing how to accurately shoot

To shoot at your best, take advantage of some expert shooting instruction. Then practice regularly - while always keeping your firearm in top condition by cleaning it after every time you shoot it. Whatever kind of hunting weapon you like, you can find certified experts who have the knowledge and experience to help you take your skills to the next level. All you need is the desire and the willingness to invest in making yourself a better hunter.

You can even get plenty of lessons and practice for free in most places, because your state wildlife federation most likely offers both instruction and firing ranges. Check with the same agency that issues your hunting licenses, and ask them to let you know where to find public shooting ranges, how to sign up for hunting workshops and shooting classes, and who to contact to learn more about shooting for the hunt. You can also inquire at your local sporting goods store or by contacting your state government and asking to be directed to the proper department. If you live in NC, for instance, there are several taxpayer funded first-class shooting ranges where you can go and do free target practice. The state also offers workshops and classes for hunters. Other states generally have the same kinds of resources available to encourage safe and fun hunting. Get better at hunting, more accurate at shooting, and safer and more successful each time you venture out to hunt.

Maybe you use a high caliber hunting pistol. Perhaps you prefer a rim-fired rifle like a .22, or you like to shoot a big game rifle or a conventional shotgun. You might be one of the many hunters who does not even own a firearm, but likes to instead hunt with a bow and arrow or a crossbow and bolts. Whatever your choice and whatever you enjoy in terms of hunting, it is important to know how to shoot and to shoot reliably and accurately. Practice regularly, because practice makes perfect. Then when you got out into the woods to hunt you can rest assured that your shooting skills will be able to work for you - not against you - at the crucial moment when you need to be dead-on accurate.
